Vilhelm Hammershøi – Interior with Young Woman from Behind (1903–04)
A chamber piece with a handful of characters and shot mostly in one location in the Alps over a tense three-day weekend in 1970 (two years after May ‘68), The Cloud Affair is a feature-length film about the doomed love of a magnetic, spellbinding young couple both suspects in the murder of a famed city builder responsible for recking their lives.
With a carefully orchestrated staging, the film narrates the intensity of the couple’s love and their struggle against the arrogance and power of their victimizer. They can find little in society to defend themselves, and must make extreme choices to respond to their situation.
The more the lovers are consumed with each other, the more they understand, with finality, that neither of them can live without the other and that love is all important. Facing condemnation and separation, they take a surprising tragic turn.
