MITOLOGIES
An interactive, stereoscopic moving-image experiment created for the CAVE virtual reality theater, Mitologies uses real-time spatial navigation to transform the viewer’s physical body into an active participant. Operating at a variable running time—averaging nearly thirteen minutes depending on the movement and choices of individual audience members—the work merges cutting-edge virtual architecture with primordial myth.
The spatial design directly integrates the geometry of the Cretan labyrinth, structuring the three-dimensional virtual space as a winding, subterranean complex that mirrors the psychogeography of the Minotaur’s lair. As viewers navigate these digital corridors, the mythic motif of entrapment, ritual, and confrontation unfolds not through traditional linear narrative, but through spatial immersion.
Underpinning this visual architecture is a dense sonic environment informed by the music of Richard Wagner. Utilizing Wagner’s concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art) alongside motifs of endless melody, the soundscape dynamically responds to the viewer’s path. Wagnerian harmonies swell and mutate through the CAVE environment, imbuing the virtual space with opera’s tragic, mythic weight—turning the virtual reality chamber into a modern locus for ancient ritual.
